Bishop Jeffrey N. Leath

 Presiding Prelate

Effective July 4, 2012, The Rt. Rev. Jeffrey Nathaniel Leath was assigned to the Thirteenth Episcopal District as Presiding Bishop. He succeeds the Rt. Reverend Vashti Murphy McKenzie, who provided eight years of tremendous leadership, and has been assigned to the 10th Episcopal District.

At The General Conference held in St Louis, MO in 2008, he was elected and consecrated the 128th Bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and was assigned to serve in the 19th Episcopal District (South Africa).  He also serves as the chair of the Commission on Women in Ministry. The Bishop is a child of the parsonage.  He was born in Huntington, New York and has lived in Norwalk, Connecticut and Inwood, New York as his father served in those places.

He is a graduate of Yale College, Yale Divinity School (Master of Divinity) and United Theological Seminary (Dayton, Ohio) - Doctor of Ministry.  His doctoral dissertation focused on the Class Leader system in the A.M.E. Church. As a pastor, he served churches in New York; Rhode Island; Norristown, Pennsylvania and Wilmington, Delaware.  His final pastoral charge was Mother Bethel Church where he served for fifteen years as the 51st pastor. Additionally, he served as Chairman of the Board of Examiners of The Philadelphia Annual Conference.

He is the husband of Susan J. Leath, M.D.  The Leath's have three children:  (the Reverend) Jennifer, Victoria, and Jeffrey, II. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and he is a 33rd degree Prince Hall Mason.
